Apply for Statehouse internship by Oct. 31

The deadline to apply for an internship with the Indiana House of Representatives is quickly approaching, and we encourage Hoosier college students and recent graduates to apply.

The House offers paid spring internships to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. Interns are paid $900 biweekly while working at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis. The internship will last the duration of the 2024 legislative session, which begins in January and concludes mid-March.

There are open internship positions in three departments. In the legislative operations office, interns work directly with constituents and help track committee activity. The communications department is looking for interns to write press releases and email newsletters, and work with social media, graphic design and audio/video production. Interns with the policy department will help research, track and analyze legislation.

Interns work full time, Monday through Friday, and will receive free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credit through the student’s college or university. Interns can also apply to a competitive $3,000 scholarship for undergraduate and graduate expenses.

The deadline to apply for a House Republican Internship is Oct. 31. Interested in joining our team? Visit IndianaHouseRepublicans.com/internship and today.

Shining A Light On Domestic Violence

October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Month, an important time to highlight life-saving resources for those seeking help. With over 40% of Hoosier women and over 25% of Hoosier men experiencing some form of domestic violence in their lifetimes, let’s join together to shine a light on domestic violence.

No one deserves to be physically or emotionally harmed, and help is available.

The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence offers resources and a searchable database of programs and services designed to help survivors.

The National Domestic Hotline also offers 24/7 support and educational tools for identifying and addressing abuse. They provide safety plans, health care recommendations and resources. To reach a trained expert, call 1-800-799-7233, text “START” to 88788 or click here to utilize a live chat feature.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, please call the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence hotline at 1-800-332-7385. Resources and support are also available at icadvinc.org. To learn more about preventing domestic violence, supporting survivors and connecting to key services, click here.

Finding Addiction Treatment Made Easier

According to a Syra Health study commissioned by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, binge drinking among younger Hoosiers is higher than the national average, and drug overdose mortality rates and opioid overdoses are increasing.

With concerning stats like these, it’s important Hoosiers can easily find high-quality addiction treatment near them. That’s why Indiana recently launched its Shatterproof Treatment Atlas. The free, confidential directory can connect people to addiction treatment providers, and compare programs on details like services, location, accepted insurance and populations served.

Indiana has over 600 addiction treatment facilities that are certified by FSSA’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction, and all are listed on Shatterproof Treatment Atlas along with data on their use of evidence-based practices. Those seeking treatment can take an anonymous assessment to determine the level of care they need.

Hoosiers searching for addiction treatment can also call 211 to be connected to local resources. FSSA has information, including a directory of recovery housing, on its website as well.

Help is available, and Hoosiers struggling with substance abuse can use these tools to find treatment. Those experiencing a mental health crisis should call 911 for medical emergencies or 988 to speak with a trained specialist.

Get Involved, Get Screened, Support Others

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a great time to get involved, get screened and support others so they don’t have to face cancer alone. According to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women after nonmelanoma skin cancer. There are also more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

While breast cancer is most often seen in women, men can also be diagnosed. Early detection through regular screenings is key to successfully treating the disease. There are several warning signs you can spot at home during regular self-screenings. If you see any of these signs, make an appointment with your health care provider as soon as you can. Regular mammograms can help detect cancer before a lump can be felt. The Indiana Breast and Cervical Cancer Program provides access to cancer screenings, diagnostic testing and treatment for Hoosiers who qualify

To raise awareness and funds for cancer research and promote healthy lifestyle choices, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is hosting several walks throughout the state, including Michiana, Northwest Indiana and Fort Wayne. With Making Strides On the Go, everyone can get involved. Click here to learn more and join the virtual event at 11 a.m. EST on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Some Hoosiers may qualify for low- or no-cost mammograms. Click here to learn more. Find cancer prevention tips and early warning signs at cancer.org.
